Course Description

This skill set has been created to align to the requirements of individuals responsible for developing traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes, as described in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management on Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments. Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this skill set can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with the relevant body before applying the skill set.

Units and Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a Statement of Attainment detailing the competencies associated with the following skill set:

RIISS00063 – Traffic Management Designer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads (TMD1)

  • RIIRIS402E – Carry out the risk management process
  • RIICWD503E – Prepare traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes

Course Delivery

Face to Face and Practical Assessments –

PLEASE NOTE – If you do not complete your placement within six months, you may be required to retake the entire course at full cost or reattempt the theory assessment for a fee of $150. This decision will be at the discretion of the RTO.

Pre-Requisites

This skill set may only be undertaken in addition to:

completion of any of the following skill sets:

  • RIISSS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads; or
  • RIISSS00061 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for High Volume Roads; or
  • RIISSS00062 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Motorways and Freeways; and

with at least 12 months experience applying the relevant skills and knowledge in a temporary traffic management workplace; and
Providing evidence of relevant experience setting up at least 20 temporary traffic management types in at least four of the following design types:

  • pedestrian and cyclist controls
  • construction sites
  • lane closures
  • shoulder closures
  • night works
  • use of portable traffic control devices
  • motorways or freeways; or
  • at least an AQF Level 6 qualification in a civil construction, traffic engineering or road design related field; or
  • entry requirements specifically detailed in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.
  • OR
  • At least an AQF Level 6 qualification in a civil construction, traffic engineering or road design related field.
    OR
  • Entry requirements specifically detailed in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.

As per entry requirements in Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management Part 8, which are: For existing workers during a jurisdiction’s transition phase to the Temporary Traffic Management National Training Framework for RIISS00063 – Traffic Management Designer skill set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads ONLY:

  • Must be currently permitted in their jurisdiction, prior to the jurisdictional adoption date, to develop, review or audit traffic management designs or traffic guidance schemes, and
  • Must provide evidence of currency of practice. This must demonstrate that in the past 3 years the applicant has designed, or reviewed, or audited a minimum of 12 TMPs or 12 TGSs. The TMPs or TGSs must include a minimum of four different worksite locations that are within the relevant jurisdiction. These worksite locations may include TTM Category 1 or TTM Category 2 or TTM Category 3 roads or sections of the network.

Education Pathways

The units provide credit towards a number of Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma qualifications in the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package and other training packages, such as RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design or equivalent.

Assessment Process

The Assessment will be theory based and Day 3 will be a practical assessment day of training.
