Course Description
This entry-level course builds a strong foundation in excavator operation. You will learn how to:
- Plan and prepare for excavator tasks (site planning, risk awareness)
- Conduct pre-operational safety checks and shutdown procedures
- Operate the excavator safely – lifting, carrying and placing materials
- Select, fit and use attachments
- Relocate machinery
- Conduct operator maintenance and site clean-up
Units and Certification
RIIMPO318F – Conduct Civil Construction Skid Steer Loader Operations
- On successful completion, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and a competency card
Course Delivery
- Pre-course learner guide and workbook provided upon enrolment
- Combination of theory and practical sessions across 3 workshop days
- Delivered at CTA training facilities or onsite (for group bookings)
Pre-Requisites
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
- Applicants will be required to undertake pre-course reading and complete an activity book to ensure an understanding of the learning content that will be reviewed in the class contact time. These materials will be supplied to the students upon enrolment and payment of the course.
- CTA Create Train Achieve does not have CRICOS accreditation and is unable to train students on an ‘International Student’ VISA.

Graduates may continue their training with further qualifications such as:
- Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations
- Certificate III in Landscape Construction
- Certificate III in Rural Operations
Assessment Process
The Skid Steer course incorporates a variety of assessment tasks throughout and may include:
- Practical demonstration of operating skills
- Written and/or oral questioning
